The Southern Anthropological Society has promoted anthropology in the American South since its founding in New Orleans on April 8, 1966.
Founded in 1966, the Southern Anthropological Society brings together anthropologists working in and about the American South across all four subfields — cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and linguistics. Our members conduct research in diverse field settings around the world while maintaining a focus on the peoples and cultures of the U.S. South.
